About us

Sandbach Striders was born back in 2003. Since the early days, membership has grown with a firm ethos of the club being not just about running but social activities as well. The club is affiliated to UK AAA and has its own qualified coaches. Many other special events take place on various nights too.

The club meets on Wednesdays at 18:30 and Sundays at 09:00 at Elworth Cricket Club.

Whilst many members compete in races from 5k to Marathons, the emphasis remains purely on keeping people motivated and having fun. Why not scan through our race reports to see what we’ve been up to? Having read them, you’re sure to see why Sandbach Striders has developed the motto of being

This week's news 02/02/2014

Sandbach Striders running club completed another mixed bag of races over the weekend.

Denis, Martin, Liz, Tom and Ben at the Alsager 5
Firstly six Striders attended the free weekly parkrun at Astbury Mere near Congleton. Molly Pheasey (aged 10) made short work of the three lap course finishing as second junior runner and outsprinting two more mature Striders (one significantly more mature) across the finishing line.

The full results were:
20:43 Rick Kelso-Davies
26:38 Jason Bulley
26:45 Johanna Bulley
31:49 Molly Pheasey
31:51 Catherine Greaves
31:52 Terry Coppenhall

At Hanley parkrun 5k, club chairman Michael Escolme joined 118 runners to run the two lap course of Hanley park. Michael finished in 23:05

Meanwhile Paul Barnett ran the Princes Park 5k parkrun in Liverpool in a season’w slowest time. He did however have the excuse that the parkrun formed the middle section of a 15 mile training run organised by the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon which will be held in Liverpool on May 25th. Paul completed the course in 27:03

On Sunday the annual running of the Alsager 5 mile road race occurred once more. The fast, flat two lap course of Alsager starts and finishes at the leisure centre. Five Striders ran the course with the big contest of the day being between father and son duo Denis and Ben Culloty. Ben finished victor on this occasion, beating his dad by over three minutes.

36.59 Martin Coleman
38.32 Tom  Mayell
43.12 Ben  Culloty
44.05 Liz O’Keeffe
46.55 Denis  Culloty

Martin just after the 1st mile.
Also on Sunday was the Charnwood Hills fell race, a (roughly) 12 mile course around the edge of Beacon Hill country park in Leicestershire. The race is organised by the Bowline climbing club and features some very challenging terrain.  Fell racing and hill loving couple Chris and Jill ran the race together, although as it was last one home buys the drinks Chris made sure to finish ahead.
