About us

Sandbach Striders was born back in 2003. Since the early days, membership has grown with a firm ethos of the club being not just about running but social activities as well. The club is affiliated to UK AAA and has its own qualified coaches. Many other special events take place on various nights too.

The club meets on Wednesdays at 18:30 and Sundays at 09:00 at Elworth Cricket Club.

Whilst many members compete in races from 5k to Marathons, the emphasis remains purely on keeping people motivated and having fun. Why not scan through our race reports to see what we’ve been up to? Having read them, you’re sure to see why Sandbach Striders has developed the motto of being

This week's news 08/04/2014

A disaster with the recording of results at Congleton parkrun didn’t dismay the eight members of Sandbach Striders who ran the three laps of Astbury Mere. Tony Taylor showing he is now back to full fitness with an excellent 6th place finish.

Also in action at Hanley parkrun was club chairman Michael Escolme who ran 35:19.

Also on Saturday was the annual long Distance Walkers Association event, the Three Shires Marathon. Four route choices are available: 20, 22, 27 or 29 miles. The event starts in Swythamley , before taking  a circular route via Gun Hill, The Roaches, Three Shires Head, Wildboarclough and Shutlingsloe. Paul Nicholls finished the event in 7 hours 3 minutes.

Saturday also saw the running of a tough event known as the Lakes 42. Chris Brumby with fellow Sandbach runner Jon Tatham took on this 42 mile route over the summit of Helvellyn. The route is unmarked and takes in over 9000 feet of climb, consequently runners have carry full winter clothing with them. Chris finished in 11 hours 44 minutes whilst Jon came in at 12 hours 58 minutes.

Sunday saw three different races taking part, Firstly a race which was cancelled due to poor weather last year was the Ironbridge half-marathon. New club treasurer Martin Coleman finished the race in 1:43:50


Following on from its successful debut last year the Beeston 10k took runners on an off-road route around Beeston Castle, taking in much of the beautiful Cheshire scenery along the way.  Tony Taylor was back in action again being first Strider home, closely followed by husband and wife team Gordon and Cheryl Hutchins.

Also on Sunday was the popular Greater Manchester Marathon, this well-supported fast and flat marathon promises runners an excellent chance of a personal best time. This proved to be the case for Steve Farnell who knocked 6 minutes off his personal best time coming in at 3:49:37



One new Strider was also in action at the Snowdonia Half-marathon, Wendy Barnes finished this tough race in 02:32:06.
